A New School: Next Steps

The Feasibility Study is now complete and has been
approved for presentation to the CISND Board of
Directors. A request has been made for our committee
to be included on
the agenda of the June 24, 2010 board meeting so that our
completed report may be presented in person.
The specific conclusions of the report are as follows:
•       St. Joseph Elementary Kelowna requires a new school.
•       Partial or total renovation of on-site buildings is
not an option.
•       New construction is the only sensible choice for
this site.
•       New construction allows all services currently
being offered on-site to continue basically
uninterrupted throughout the entire
re-development process
•       The budget to do this is approximately $10 million
dollars
St. Joseph Elementary School first opened its doors
in 1938. For more than seventy years we have been
making good and honoured use of a generous physical
legacy that was left to us. It is time to step up and
offer our own modern contribution to that gift of
long ago by building a brand new St. Joseph school.
It’s time we did our part in ensuring seventy more
years of Catholic Education in the City of Kelowna.

Completed Feasibility Study

Feasibility Study Proposal

Recently, a feasibility study was launched to look into the possibility of a new St. Joseph school. The study itself has been officially underway since late September 2009 when architect Jim Meiklejohn was professionally retained to assist in the consultation process. So far, our New School Sub-Committee has met to consider various options and suggestions for basic site re-organization and potential ideas relating to a new school. Very basic meetings have been conducted at City Hall to ensure the process will go as smoothly as possible. Still, we are not yet at a stage to commit to any one design for planning purposes as the study requires us to also consider partial or full renovation (per Diocesan request).

Contained here are several drawings providing hypothetical designs to be discussed, tweaked or tossed out entirely. We are still very early in the overall process but are well on to the road to completing our feasibility study which, upon completion, will allow our New School Sub-Committee to offer a final recommendation to both our own Kelowna Catholic School Council and then to the Board of Directors of the Nelson Diocese.
